A bedtime story to dream sweetly
Once upon a time, there were two siblings named Hansel and Gretel. They lived with their kind father in a small, simple cottage near the edge of a deep forest. Their father was a woodcutter, and although he worked very hard, times were tough, and sometimes there wasn’t enough food for everyone.
One day, Hansel and Gretel went for a walk in the forest to gather fruit and firewood. They walked and walked… until they got distracted by chirping birds and fluttering butterflies. Before they knew it, they were lost!
Gretel held her brother’s hand tightly and said:
“Don’t worry, Hansel. We’ll find our way back together.”
As they searched for a path, they stumbled upon the most amazing sight — a house made entirely of sweets! The roof was chocolate, the windows were candy, and the garden was filled with cookies.
Eyes wide with wonder, Hansel took a bite of a cookie wall, and Gretel picked a jellybean from the fence.
Suddenly, the door creaked open... and an old woman stepped out. She wore a colorful skirt and leaned on a shiny cane, smiling warmly.
“Come in, my dears. You must be tired and hungry!”
Inside, the house was even more magical — it smelled of vanilla, had soft chairs, and a cozy fireplace. The woman served them warm bread with butter and sweet cocoa.
But after a few days, Hansel and Gretel began to feel that something wasn’t quite right. The woman watched them too closely... and sometimes whispered strange things.
One night, Gretel overheard her mumbling:
“With Hansel well fed, he’ll be perfect for my cooking pot…”
Terrified, she rushed to wake her brother.
“Hansel! We have to get out of here now! This house may be magical, but that woman is a witch in disguise!”
Together, they came up with a clever plan. When the witch told Hansel to climb into the oven, he pretended not to understand.
“Could you show me how it’s done?” he asked.
Grumbling, the witch bent over to demonstrate — and in a flash, brave Gretel shut the oven door tight!
The children dashed through the house and found a chest filled with sparkling gems and golden coins. With courage and cleverness, they took a small share to help their father and ran back into the forest, following the golden light of the sun.
With the help of a golden bird, they found their way home. Their father, overjoyed, hugged them tightly.
“You are my greatest treasures,” he said, eyes full of tears.
And so, Hansel, Gretel, and their father lived together once more — filled with joy, love, and a happily-ever-after.
